Dear Brothers and Sisters:
May the peace of the Lord be with you.
So much has passed during these past months that we cannot even express with words God’s faithfulness in our lives and ministry in the Atlantic Coast of Nicaragua. Therefore, we come along David in Psalm 68:4-6a that says: “Sing to God, praise in his name, extol him who rides on the clouds—his name is the Lord—and rejoice before him. A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in his holy dwelling. God sets the lonely in families…”
Yes, “God sets the lonely in families” really became a reality in Duren’s life two weeks ago in Safe Harbor at Bethel Church in Bluefields. One week ago, Ketly shared with the children in the After School Program that verse of the scripture and dawn on her the life of Duren who recently came to be part of our family at Bethel.
Duren’s grandmother, Nilda, came to the church looking for a safe place so her grandson of ten years old will not continue to be in the street from morning until evening with a group of young men. She used all kind of punishment in order to restrain him to be out of the street, but without success. Nilda saw the danger where Duren was heading to and she preferred to separate him from the rest of his three brothers in order to save his life.
When Duren was four years old, his mother went to work in the cruise ship during eight months per year in order to take care of her family. For nine years, he was the last child of three in the family until his brother of nine months came along. Duren’s father lives in Bluefields, but he doesn’t have any influence in the life of his sons. For visitation rights on weekends in Safe Harbor, we asked Nilda if she was not going to put the name of Duren’s father on the list. She answered: “He doesn’t see his children unless they go to look for him.”
Duren arrived on Saturday and on Sunday Ketly was in the emergency room with him because his left hand and fingers were so infected that he could hardly move his fingers. Because Duren spent must of his time outside of home, Nilda could not even take care of the sores he had all over his body neither giving him the proper medication on time. The doctor prescribed him medication and said that we needed to keep these infected areas clean. Because he is in Safe Harbor and he cannot disappear the whole day as he used to do, Escarleth and Onell, the house parents, were able to give him the proper attention and Onell gave him good baths for few days.
Last weekend, the whole family came to visit Duren in order to spend the day with him. Wow! What a crowd, everybody had their hands full of goodies for Duren. Duren was able to spend the whole day with his brothers and other family members by playing, swimming and eating together. When Ketly spoke to Nilda asking her how she saw Duren, she answered: “plenty better”. Wow, Praise the Lord! The promise of God is real. “God sets the lonely in families.”
God is able to put us in a place where we can feel His love flowing to others that are fatherless and lonely. Duren is part of the family in Safe Harbor, where we have two other children, who has become a big brother and a little sister to Duren. We know that there are many children in that same situation of Duren in Bluefields and surrounding villages, but the Lord is bringing them on His time.
For those who came to help us building Safe Harbor in 2005-2006, Vital mentioned that you are building a home for children that you do not even know. Duren wants to give you thanks for all of your hard work in Bluefields, working under the sun or rain. We can testify that it is making a difference. Thank you so much for making a difference for eternity in the life of Duren and for those who will come to Safe Harbor.
Thank you so much for trusting in God in us to make the difference in the life of the people that we minister. Thank you for your prayers and financial contributions – without them, we would not be able to serve the people in the Atlantic Coast of Nicaragua.
In Christ,
Vital and Ketly Pierre
